What is health insurance?

Health insurance is a policy that covers your medical costs if you become ill while studying in Ireland. It ensures you don’t have to pay out-of-pocket for healthcare services during your stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need health insurance if I already have a policy?

Many travel insurance policies only cover medical expenses for the first 15 to 30 days after your arrival. Once you register as a student in Ireland, you are considered a resident and will need health insurance in addition to travel insurance.

I’m from Europe – do I still need health insurance?

I’m from Europe – do I still need health insurance?
If you are from an EU member state, you are entitled to the same healthcare rates as Irish residents. Request a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you travel.

However, be aware that doctor visits in Ireland typically cost €50-60, which you may still need to pay even with an EHIC. Purchasing health insurance (or travel insurance for short-term courses) can provide added peace of mind.

I’m from outside Europe – do I need health insurance?

If you are from a non-EU country and plan to study or stay in Ireland for more than 90 days, you will need a student visa. To obtain a student visa, you must have government-approved health insurance.

Non-EU students without proper health insurance will not be able to obtain or renew their student visa.
